A Brief History of
The Candlewyck Inn
My brother, Lew, needed something to do 20 years ago, so he decided to open a restaurant. Kind of like the old Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland movies "let’s put on a show"–we had no idea what we were doing.
Lew and I both had worked in restaurants in New York while growing up. I had gone to college and studied music (this is cooking experience?) and Lew had done several different things. Lew found the building–at the time it was located next door to Keyser High School and it had been for sale for years.
Lew and our father were able to purchase the building, and the adventure began. Six months were spent renovating–tearing down walls, adding walls, replacing plumbing and electrical services, refinishing floors and putting up new wallpaper. We opened November 4, 1984, with a grand-opening celebration which brought rave reviews and much anticipation. Then we actually opened. What a nightmare. It was really tough, but we persevered, and here we are over 20 years later, still going strong.
Our goal has always been to provide a spot for a great dinner, a casual drink and a sandwich, a nice comfortable place to stay, and a good, comfortable workplace for our staff of nearly 20 persons. We buy the best quality food products we can find . . . we never skimp on quality, and our pricing has always reflected a fair and reasonable price for the quality of our product.
We stay open when it snows . . . we’re open except on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and some other select holidays.
