Geatz Lunchroom & Saloon, Circa 1880
In 1860, Johannes Gotz, whose name was later changed to John Geatz for pronunciation, moved with his fiancée Anna Catherine to Cumberland, MD from Bavaria, Germany. Ten days after their arrival they were married at Saints Peter & Paul Church. John started the Saloon/Lunchroom around 1880 on Baltimore Street in downtown Cumberland. After John’s death, it’s believed that his sons, George P., John J. and William, operated the saloons.
During the later part of the 19th century, when society began to condemn alcohol consumption, the Geatz saloons and lunchrooms gradually migrated to one location owned by George P. Geatz. The business was then known as the "John Geatz Saloon/Lunchroom." It was located on Mechanic Street in downtown Cumberland. In 1905 George P. moved the business to its present location on Paca Street, Cumberland.
On March 28, 1936, George P. was involved in a car accident, which left him with a broken hip and pelvis, never to walk again. At this time his son Norman "Cotton" Geatz took over ownership of "Geatz’s Place." Cotton married Margaret Elliott and had seven children. Through his business, Cotton made hundreds of friends over the years. He continued to run his bar restaurant until his retirement in 1978, when two of his sons, John P. (Phil) and George E., purchased the business. Over the years, Phil and George expanded the business into a steak & seafood restaurant & pub.
On December 30, 1999, Phil, Sis (his wife), and their son John P., "JP," the fifth generation of the Geatz family, purchased the remaining 50% of the business from George, Phil’s brother. JP and his wife Brenda are the general managers. The new generation of Geatz owners plan to hold onto the business’s 120-year heritage as the fun place for good food and good friends.
